Joy in our Practice

May 19, 2020

This message seems particularly appropriate as we are in a a time when our profession is tasked with responding to one of the most overwhelming crisis of our times. So proud of all nurses collectively for rising to this immense challenge .

The joy in life is won in its deepest and truest sense only by those who have not shirked life’s burdens.

Joy in our Practice

May 14, 2020

It has been a strange “Nurses’ Day”, but then again, it is a strange time. I reflect on the 7am and 7pm clap outs in NYC and other cities to say thank you to the essential personnel changing shifts and I think – that is healing for everyone. It reminds me of this quote from Steve Maraboli:

“Just an observation: it is impossible to be both grateful and depressed. Those with a grateful mindset tend to see the message in the mess. And even though life may knock them down, the grateful find reasons, if even small ones, to get up”.

I think all the expressions of gratitude for our work right now is healing for the public and us. Soak it in…it is better than a cookie – even though they were delicious!

Joy in our Practice

May 7, 2020

Hello all,

Nurses week certainly takes on a new meaning this year, and now more than every we appreciate our incredible teams.  At the beginning of this pandemic I sent the below message to my staff, and it still holds true 8 weeks later.  Feel free to use all or sections to send along to your teams, we truly are making history.

The events of the past two weeks have been extraordinary.  Never in our lifetime have we witnessed the global impact of a pandemic, and could never have anticipated how it would affect every aspect of our daily lives. Every single one of us has a story; a concern for an elderly family member living in your house, a spouse that is now out of work, infant children, your own health condition, an immunocompromised family member, a major life event altered or cancelled, the list goes on.   Yet all of you are here, you come to work, day in and day out you take extraordinary care of our patients, and each other.  You take this responsibility very seriously!

History has shown that during a crises heath care providers make the difference, we pull together, we get our patients and each other through, we get it done!  I have watched all of you over the past two weeks take on this challenge with professionalism and grace.  I know I say this often, and every day it is even more apparent, I appreciate you all more than you will ever know. I could not be more proud and honored to be with you.

Take a moment to watch this 2 minute video.  It’s about nurses….but we all know it takes all of us!  We are making history.
