Joy in our Practice

March 30, 2023

Is Joy possible during these times of discord? Mary Oliver offers her perspective that while it is often hard to simply live in and enjoy the moment, she urges us to give in to the possibility of that moment and fully experience the joy.

To start with Love and in that instant, the possibility emerges.

Don’t Hesitate

If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy,
don’t hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty
of lives and whole towns destroyed or about
to be. We are not wise, and not very often
kind. And much can never be redeemed.
Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this
is its way of fighting back, that sometimes
something happens better than all the riches
or power in the world. It could be anything,
but very likely you notice it in the instant
when love begins. Anyway, that’s often the
case. Anyway, whatever it is, don’t be afraid
of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.

Joy in our Practice

March 28, 2023

Ramadan began on March 23rd and continues for 30 days.

For the Muslim, Ramadan is a time to set things rights once more, to sort out the priorities in one’s life. It is a time to make a new start and to take one’s religion seriously again, to be faithful to prayers, to recite the Qur’an, to give thanks at all times to Allah for His goodness. Ramadan gives the chance to start all over again and to forget the mistakes of the past. It is a time to spring-clean one’s spiritual house and invite Allah into every room in that house.

When each day’s fast is over there is a deep sense of joy and happiness. It is a time when Muslims share with each other what they have achieved during the day. To all, Ramadan Mubarak (means “Blessed Ramadan”).

Joy in our Practice

March 23, 2023

I was joyful to be teaching mindfulness to a group of nurses today and we were practicing mindful listening skills.  I know many of us have seen this 3 minute video from Brene Brown, but I watched it for maybe the 200th time this morning and again found it so poignant.

I invite you to identify maybe one conversation you are going to have over the next few days or over the weekend and practice this mindful listening.  See how it might enhance your connection and joy in relationship with others around you.
